On this momentous occasion, allow it to be said heretofore that this very location has been impaired in a sense most grievous. It now accommodates a contemporary characteristic, yet one so classical, one might assume it has undergone a renaissance — hyphenation and justification. I mightily anticipate it will supplement your enjoyment of this Internet backwater in its fullest. If the reader encounters any issues apropos the new property, let it be known that comments and criticisms are perpetually agreeable.

Right. Now I can close that thesaurus window.

Nice work on the justified text in the blog text. And now that I’ve tried zooming the page in and out, even nicer work with the automated hyphenation. It almost makes the browser look as good as latex, circa 1990. One day we’ll have on the fly reflowing text everywhere.

Did you need to do anything special to hyphenate (or prevent it in) made up words? What about URLs?

Any thoughts on applying the same trick to the comments section? It looks all ragged down here…

It wasn’t that hard. A List Apart had an article on it just recently. I just lifted all the hard javascript other people wrote up.

The way it works is there’s javascript which shoves a “soft hyphen” everywhere it possibly can, which means a ton of UTF-8 characters you can’t see on screen. This could have issues in copying and pasting, but I reason if people don’t use the feature then browser makers won’t fix issues with that feature.

I decided to leave the comments ragged. They tend to be written fairly free-form. I didn’t want people to feel like their text needed to be a work of art. Also, I don’t have editorial control over comments like I do over text, and I’m as yet unsure if the technique works well enough.
