I’ve begun to see more and more TV screens in cars such as 4WDs. Invariably, they’re playing cartoons for the kiddies in the rear seats to watch. There’s only one problem. I sometimes start watching them as well. On the road, they’re the brightest thing visible, and they’re right in the line of sight. Also, I’m curious as to what they’re subjecting their kids to (usually spongebob squarepants). I’ve actually gotten so drawn in once that these bright lights came on and I was like "WTF!?!"

NSW urged to learn from WYD transport success. It’s down the bottom.

So the average wage of a worker in Australia is something like 50k a year, obviously higher in the CBD. World Youth Day lasted about a weak. However the CBD was deserted thanks to traffic fears. Thus if 239,200 people at 50k a year took the week off then there’s been no net benefit to the economy? Funny how thats also around the same amount of pilgrims (200k) whom attended WYD.

Where did you get the 239,200 figure? Also, what makes you think this time was “for free”? Businesses are obliged to give ppl a certain amount of holidays. The only issue here is that a bunch of them possibly took those holidays at the same time. This actually results in increased efficiency, not decreased.

50k a year average wage = ~$961 a week.

WYD was here for about a week and “made” $230mil for Sydney.

Or the same as 239,200 people working for a week in Sydney at the average wage.

So what you’re saying is that if 240,000 odd people took a week-long holiday, the money would simply have changed hands from businesses not in the tourism / retail sector to the businesses in the tourism / retail sector.

In fact, the government would actually be doubling up, because those 240,000 odd people would go somewhere else for a holiday, spending even more money (hopefully somewhere else in NSW). So, a bunch of tourism related industries have made around $460 mil, total (assuming CBDers spent the same as “the youth” in Sydney).

Also, because people had to take holidays to compensate, it was us ordinary Australians (working in the CBD) who had to pay for it instead of the businesses themselves, because holidays are “our time” after all (not the businesses), using our hard earned money and holiday time… to go on a holiday.

The nerve!

Not everyone gets holiday pay. Contractors, part time workers, casual workers, shift workers.

Fixed costs didn’t cease to exist. Loans, rent, skeletal staff, on call staff.

Shutdown companies can not process sales. Unless I guess they are some sort of catalog business and their delivery system isn’t being fully utilized.

I remember the horse racing industry last year asking for a large hand out from the government because of WYD and the shutting down of their industry at Randwick following the equine flu epidemic.
