Man charged after being clocked at double speed limit.
What a monster. Doing over double the speed limit in a 60 zone. He could have killed someone. Throw the book at him and strip him of his licence forever. Won’t somebody please think of the children. etc,…
Ok so here’s the scenario. A local to Bathurst who probably knows the road inside out and back to front, was on a stretch of completely straight wide road with clear visibility, at a time when pedestrians wouldn’t be wandering out onto the street, at a speed marginally higher than normal highway speeds 123kph vs 110kph, on a road that regularly caters for cars doing upto 300kph.
I suppose we should all thank the police for taking this obviously dangerous and reckless person off the streets whom obviously has no regard for other peoples saftey, trading respect the community has for the police for revenue for the state government. Finally doing all that rather than doing things that the community would actually like the police to do. Like preventing or bringing to justice persons whom commit crimes against property or persons. You know. Crimes with an actual victim and a real cost to the community.
I disagree with what you’re saying on this one. Out of race time, this is a normal rural two-way road leading to houses and farms.
Every year hundreds of rednecks (including myself at one time) visit the track and pretend they are Peter Brock and speed around the “circuit”. I only did a maximum of 80kmh, but that was enough.
In fact I didn’t get that far before I saw a rural fire truck with firefighters all pleading for me to slow down. No doubt they have actually had to attend nasty accidents due to speeding. There are some tight turns, and even on the straights this road is NOT equipped for two way traffic doing more than the speed limit. It is not a divided road; a head-on smash would be fatal.
The fact that this guy was doing marginally higher than normal highway speeds is irrelevant, because the speed limit is 60 km/h, no matter if the road is used for race cars at parts of the year doing 300km/h. I also think the fact that he was a local Bathurst driver is less important than the fact he is 20 and IMO therefore means he is still a comparitively inexperienced driver.
Even if there are no pedestrians, there is a real possibility of a family car filled with children that are on their way home who may have been coming the other way. Protecting THESE people against drivers like that is what is important for the community.
People who want to race should go to proper race days under strict supervision with emergency services at easy reach.
